Body Positivity - My Story

I have been overweight my entire life. I haven’t known any other way. And, over time, I have accepted my curves and my squishy bits. But, about a year ago, I was thrown another self-esteem curve ball. I was diagnosed with Vitiligo. Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease where my body kills off its own melatonin causing white spots to randomly appear on my skin.

This disease only affects 1% of people and usually appears before the age of 20. It isn’t contagious, there is no cure, and you can’t control how slowly or how quickly it spreads across your body. For me, ‘spots’ started appearing on my arms, spread to my hands and now there are patches visible on my face.

Unfortunately, the side effects are low self-esteem, depression and even suicide.

As a woman in her mid-50’s, who exudes self-confidence, you would think I could handle this with ease, but even I find myself struggling at times. It’s so visible, uncontrollable and unpredictable and, can be scary to people because they don’t know or understand Vitiligo.
